MOULTHROP: A Southern Legacy
Three Generations of Woodturning
September 24 – December 18, 2011 in Galleries 1-3
Opening Reception: 6-8 p.m., Saturday, September 24
Dinner with Matt and Philip Moulthrop Silent Auction (Benefiting MCMA): Oct. 13
Gallery Talk/Lecture: Nov. 5
The exhibit will feature the distinctive work of Atlantans Ed Moulthrop, his son Philip, and his grandson, Matt and will be comprised of works on loan from Southern collectors. It is a comprehensive collection of work made by each of the Moulthrops and tells the unique story of a modern family that has passed a tradition of craft down through the generations – a rare accomplishment today. The exhibit will honor the Moulthrops contribution to the history of contemporary woodworking and to Atlanta.
The Moulthrops have evolved a distinctive style and a unique approach to their work that is recognized internationally. Living and working in Marietta and using primarly southeastern woods, recognition of their work began in the South and quickly spread worldwide. As a family they share a passion for wood and its natural beauty. While working independently to create and develop their own ideas, the work of each has benefitted from the shared knowledge of three generations of experience and experimentation. They speak the same language of form and graceful simplicity. Within each bowl they make is the connection to the south, the life of the tree, the history of contemporary woodturning, and the legacy of the Moulthrop family.

We would like to thank the artists who submitted and congratulate those who were selected to exhibit in our eleventh annual juried exhibition. We were pleased to secure Jessica Pepe who adjudicated the submissions and selected the pieces you see in this year's exhibition. Pepe received her BA in Fine Arts from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2006 and her MA in Museum Studies from New York University, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences in 2010. Pepe has extensive experience in managing private and public art collections, including those at the Pace Gallery in Ne York and Masterpiece International, Ltd. in Boston. Pepe is currently ith the Pace Gallery in new York, NY.
Comments from our Juror:
The concept of "montage" brought to mind a variety of ideas for me to ponder while going through the artists' submissions for this exhibition. What I thought about most was how a montage can convey the feeling of something being whole yet scattered at the same time, simply because the entire work is made up of separate, complete pieces. The idea of incorporation augmented this idea, which makes me believe that realizing a montage can be a truly active form of art. With this in mind I was drawn to works that gave a sense of movement, activity and purpose. Ultimately, I looked for intriguing, conflicting, correlating, comprehensive pieces to be a part of this exhibition. The winners that I picked... were concise but with an expansive quality, which truly makes them powerful.

Art, Artists and Artifacts of the Civil War
May 28 – Sept. 8, 2011 in Galleries 4 & 5
The Civil War occurred one hundred and fifty years ago. America was changing culturally and so were the arts. With this exhibition we have chosen to commemorate the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The significance of art during the Civil War is noteworthy as the war occurred at a time when there was great change in the American culture and the role of the visual arts.
Included with many selections of our permanent collection are artworks and artifacts from the collections of the following people and organizations. We are grateful for their contributions: Fred D. Bentley, the Booth Western Art Museum, Cathy and Chris Brown, Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society, Terri and Steve Cole, Jeanne and Skip Harper, David and Chris Knoke, and Robert Meredith.
John Folsom: Summering at the End of Empire

John Folsom's work deals primarily with the way in which images of landscape are used or fictionalized to present a personal sense of place. Folsom's photographic paintings have been widely exhibited for the past 10 years and can be found in many collections worldwide.

Tindel Michi: Relics
January 8 – March 27, 2011 in Galleries 1-3
After a three year hiatus to explore and develop new works and philosophies independent of the collaboration, TindelMichi reunite in their latest exhibition Relics on display at the Marietta | Cobb Museum of Art. Visitors to the exhibit will be met by the heavily layered large scaled painted works, sculptural works and sound installations that explore the ghosts of a regions haunted history and remixed narratives historical and personal.
TindelMichi is John Tindel and Michi Meko a collaborative duo working together to create a unique aesthetic influenced by the Southern region of the United States.Their work is a direct reflection of growing up in a newer, urbanized, and more racially sensitive South than of the past. Still haunted by history’s ghost, their interest is in narratives, symbols and objects. Graphic painting styles and site specific installations commingle with heritage, rituals, daily visual stimuli and design to collage the imagination into dreamlike landscapes. They have combined their vernaculars to develop cryptic phrases and developed a catalog of symbolic elements that continue to appear in the works. Under the guise of humor and wit, they closely examine and question stories and objects that harness the powers of racial division in America.
