Hand-Building with Clay
Learn techniques for manipulating clay without using a pottery wheel. Beginner students will learn the fundamental techniques of hand building in ceramics (pinch, coil, and slab methods) and intermediate and advanced students will refine their skills. You will learn different glazing techniques and surface decoration. Your teaching artist will guide you through the techniques and help you create projects around your interests. This session is appropriate for adults and youth aged 11 plus. All supplies are included, and you’ll leave the class with at least one finished piece!

Ceramic Open Studio
Our Ceramic Open Studios offer a flexible, supportive environment where students can work at their own pace on personal projects!
No instruction provided. You need to have taken a pottery class with MCMA or have prior experience with pottery. Held on select Tuesdays and Sundays.
Meet the Instructor
Maryellen Hagberg is a ceramics artist and graphic designer from Resaca, Georgia. She graduated from Georgia College & State University with a dual bachelor’s degree in art, concentrated in graphic design, and liberal studies, concentrated in ceramics and philosophy. Maryellen loves making functional ceramics pieces with artistic elements to bring color and design into everyday life.
At MCMA, Maryellen teaches youth programs, including summer camps and Art ASP enrichment program classes with Marietta City Schools, as well as classes for handbuilding ceramics for all ages.
In her free time, Maryellen likes to read, play with her dog Odie, and play board games and video games with friends.
