The Winners
First Place: Mina (Okkyu) Duffie, Shoe Seller, Hanji (Korean traditional paper)
This Hanji sculpture displays a masterful sense of technical skill including balance, detail, and texture. The delicate but flexible material allows for creating depth and realism in the figures. The use of Hanji in contemporary art connects modern practices to historical Korean tradition. The figures, who balance on their own, are dressed in traditional clothing and carry objects representing their labors in life, contributing a narrative to the scene. Their poses and expressions convey hard work and resilience.
Second Place: Gail Wegodsky, Book Sale at the Forum, oil on linen
The painting showcases impressive detail and realism with a well-balanced composition. Contemporary architectural elements contrast with the historic structure outside. Notably, the artist masterfully captures natural light streaming through windows, creating intricate shadows. The warm tones of the book sale contrast beautifully with the cool blues and greens of the exterior, enhancing the painting’s harmony and appeal.
Third Place: Patsy Rausch, 5am Light, mixed-media: photography, acrylic, and handmade paper
The artist expertly captures the early morning mood with dynamic light and shadow in this mixed media piece. The dramatic lighting and three-dimensional texture create a striking effect, while the perspective draws the eye into the room, enhancing the sense of space. The open-ended narrative element is also alluring, for the scene suggests a frozen moment in time that allows viewers to imagine their own narratives or symbolism.
