The Marietta Cobb Museum of Art is pleased to present Chad Cole’s metro Atlanta debut solo exhibition, Travels and Transitions. Chad Cole is a South Carolina based artist who predominantly paints pastoral vistas that often contain barns taken over by nature, abandoned farmhouses, or dilapidated roadside oddities. Blending traditional artistic values with contemporary stylizing, Cole is inspired by his environment, passage of time, and his travels throughout Italy and the Deep South. Much artwork in this exhibition explores Cole’s chosen themes of the Southern Gothic and the concept of “The American Dream,” but he also conveys the impact that travel and gaining new perspective has had on his artistic and personal growth.

From January 11th to March 22nd of 2020, MCMA exhibited Chad Cole’s debut solo exhibition titled Travels and Transitions. Themes often seen in Cole’s work include Southern Gothic and the American Dream through his agrarian landscapes in oil. In an interview with MCMA’s curator Madeline Beck, Cole explained his passion for oil painting and the artistic growth that comes with world travel. For his most recent works exhibited at MCMA, Cole drew inspiration from his time spent in Appalachia. Geometric layering of tones began to arise in response to the familiar barn quilts seen traditionally throughout western North Carolina.
